2017 Snow Safety Dispatch #2

Date: March 21, 2017

Mission: Traveled from Friend’s Hut to Star Pass. Established Star Base platform, set up and secured tent. Assessed snowpack immediately adjacent to the pass and the terrain above the course. Completed all communications with CB Base and Opa’s Hut team for rendezvous tomorrow at Geo’s Bonfire.

Observations: Another warm day at 12,000 feet. Light breezes and a sunny start lead to warm and overcast into the afternoon. Star Base went in as planned and secured into to normal spot looking into Taylor Basin. Team of 3 dispatched to check the cornices and snowpack over the traverse from Star Pass returning with a report of a very solid existing snowpack. Currently we are turning our attention to the potential new snow later this week.

Conclusion: Want to remind racers that there will be a dirt crossing just before the Star Pass check point. The route for the race course is looking great but there is weather on the way. Timing of approaching weather will be a factor for both Star and Taylor Passes. In the Elk Mountains Grand Traverse tradition Mother Nature will be a competitor. Racers should be excited for great alpine racing conditions.
