Due to weather and snow safety considerations, the exact course cannot be finalized until race day. Race organizers may change the course based on snow conditions, weather or other safety concerns. In extreme circumstances, the course may be modified to finish in Crested Butte rather than in Aspen. The final course will be determined and described to racers at the Mandatory Race Meeting.
We appreciate your understanding of our efforts to create a safe race.
Crested Butte Mountain Resort Route
Racers ascent from the base area up Warming House Hill, proceeding past past Painter Boy Lift, up Houston, to the “Five Way” intersection. Here racers may transition in order to allow a flat traverse along the ridge to the top of Gold Link lift. Here racers will descend off the ridge on the North Pass run, exiting the resort boundary down the “Indian Trail” gulch.
There are 4 cut-off points on the course:
In the event that conditions do not permit a through race to Aspen, the Grand Traverse will revert to the following standardized Reverse Course.
The Reverse route follows the start of the Traverse course all the way to the Friends Hut. Rather than ascending west to Star Pass, the route ascends north and east into the high basin above the Friends Hut. The route then heads back down East Brush Creek to trail 402 and forks left (south) ascending trail 402 towards Ferris Creek. The route then ascends the north side of Strand Hill to the top of Strand Hill where it descends the southwest side of Strand Hill to Brush Creek Road. The route continues on Brush Creek Road to to the Upper Upper Loop trail where it heads northwest to the Upper Loop trail on the flanks of Mt. Crested Butte. The route takes a right on the Happy Hour Trail taking racers to the Top of the West Wall Lift where it then descends to the CBMR base area to the finish.
