Backcountry Education Series

The Grand Traverse is pleased to partner with Aspen Alpine Guides & Irwin Guides in promoting a series of educational courses aimed at raising backcountry safety and awareness.

Registration in the 2020 Grand Traverse Ski Race is NOT a prerequisite for participation in these programs.
Courses have been custom designed to address GT specific terrain & race strategy insights, but will provide essential education to any skier seeking to acquire general backcountry travel awareness.

Program Descriptions

AIARE Avalanche Rescue – $175 
This 1-day refresher course is based off of industry and rescue standards and has additional safety components designed specifically for Grand Traverse training and race day. This course is intended to provide you with companion rescue education, how to manage a white out, and to familiarize yourself with the course terrain so you can train and race safely. Participants will work with beacons, shovels and probes to demonstrate effective techniques for beacon searching, and basic searching and medical care practices. This trip includes a loaner kit of Beacon, Shovel and Probe from Ortovox.

 

GT Race Training  – $150
During this 1-day training day participants will not only log miles with guides and athletes, they will also learn about race nutrition and hydration, race techniques, how to manage a white out and stay on course, emergency bivy preparation, and terrain familiarization.
This trip includes a loaner kit of Beacon, Shovel and Probe from Ortovox.

2 Day / 1 Night Hut Trips utilizing Friends Hut / Barnard Hut – $325
Colorado’s extensive hut system offers the ultimate Grand Traverse training ground. Spend two days and one night in the Colorado backcountry preparing for the Grand Traverse. In addition to getting training miles under your skis, the guides will discuss proper nutrition and hydration, how to repair equipment, the course route, terrain traps and terrain familiarization, and how to address signs and symptoms of hypothermia, dehydration, and altitude sickness. This is a great opportunity to get race ready while also learning basic backcountry knowledge.
This trip includes a loaner kit of Beacon, Shovel and Probe from Ortovox.

 

3 Day / 2 Night Hut Trips utilizing Friends Hut / Barnard Hut – $615 
(Same as 2 Day 1 Night but includes AIARE Rescue)
Colorado’s extensive hut system offers the ultimate Grand Traverse training ground. Spend three days and two nights in the Colorado backcountry preparing for the Grand Traverse.
